A Piece of Fabric

It's just a piece of fabric
Somewhat weathered and frayed
I mend it time to time
The inevitable delayed
Consider it a 'family' heirloom
'Handed down' with pride
Drawing upon Liberty's breath
That winds of Freedom provide
It typifies a people
Signifies a way
From the stitch of it's conception
Enveloping us today
It's just a piece of fabric
A simple red, white and blue
I mend it time to time
As I've pledged I'd always do
