Consider This Payback

He was used to goin’ toe to toe
Could ‘take one’ on the chin
But facing mortality
Was a bitch of reality
For one not prone to give in

His wife sat by the hospital bed
Smiled as he said with a frown
"I should be ridin'
Not here hidin'
Wearin’ leathers, not this gown"

She reached for him, he met her hand
Told her, through a cautious laugh
"Ya think it’s too late?
Am I tempting fate?
Expecting prayers on my behalf?"

A knock of formality upon the door
When entered a young MD
"What now Doc?
More bloodwork and talk?
How ‘bout a Whiskey IV?"

The Doctor stared at the Biker
Placed a bag upon the bed
Said, "It’s never too late
Nor tempting fate
Consider this payback instead"

"Ya call that bedside manner Doc?
I’m about to blow a fuse
I’ll give ya a pass
On kickin’ your ass
Be careful of the words you choose"

"Good enough", said the Doctor
He handed the bag to his wife
"You’ll find a picture in there
Attached to a Teddy Bear
Pieces of a new lease on life"

"Fifteen years ago, in the lobby downstairs
A mother and son sat and stared
As Bikers, one by one
On an Annual Toy Run
Showed, once again, they cared"

"The gifts, the carols, goodwill hugs
Every child received a toy
But nothing could compare
To a brand new Teddy Bear
Nor the Biker who gave it to that boy"

"The lobby had emptied, the run moved on
Minus one Biker who stayed
They ate and talked
Laughed and walked
Went back to his room and played"

"His mom grabbed her camera, took a shot
A special moment shared
The pieces of a new lease on life
Are in the bag I’ve handed your wife
Consider this payback, for one who cared"
