One Step Ahead

Thought about Dad the other day
It's been years, since he's passed away
Things he'd do, words he said
The man who kept one step ahead

As I set my bike, walked where he laid
Bowed my head, briefly prayed
I felt the welling, the tear that shed
Over the man who kept one step ahead

When headlights and shadows would haunt my nights
I wasn't allowed to turn on lights
There he'd be as 'Monsters' fled
The man who kept one step ahead

A different world, another time
He was the reason, I was the rhyme
I'd want approval, If but a word, simply said
From the man who kept one step ahead

I recalled how he didn't like
The day I bought my very first bike
But there seemed to be room in our crowded shed
The man who kept one step ahead

Fate found it's way within my life
I fell in love with my future wife
He was best man, the day we wed
The man who kept one step ahead

When children came, he acted strange
Discipline I knew, had somehow changed
"Take it easy," is what he said,
The man who kept one step ahead

I was fortunate to have had
The chance to say, "I love you dad."
A memory which keeps my soul well fed
Of the man who kept one step ahead

Guardian Angels, they do exist
My 'flirts' with death, too long to list
Not due to luck, it's as I've said
The man who kept one step ahead
