By a cross of stone, a wooden bench
Where'd she sit, nearly everyday
To laugh, to cry, to wonder why
At times to simply pray
"It's me again, I need to talk
You'd say, I'm wastin my time
But time's all I have these days
So here just suits me fine"
"After all the years, side by side
I still find to be true
You're the one who gets me by
The one who sees me through"
"Our daughter came by, with your grandson today
He came bursting through the door
With his Harley toys, complete with noise
An occasional added roar"
"He was riding on "Papa's" Run
Which ended on your chair
When I noticed in our daughter's eyes
An all too familiar stare"
"I've seen that look too many times
You know, she has your eyes
She made some tea, said, "sit with me"
This may come as a surprise"
"Mama, remember as a child
When grandpa passed away
Grandma came to live with us
The things I used to say?"
"Of how I went to visit him
With the man all dressed in white?"
It was then her eyes filled with tears
"The man came back last night"
"The chill I felt, the empty breath
She motioned to her son
"Grandma, please don't be afraid
I went on Papa's Run"
"When mommy tucked me into bed
I was sad inside
I prayed to God that Papa
Could give me one more ride"
"That is when I saw the man
He was shining like a light
A very nice man grandma
All dressed up in white"
"Don't cry grandma, it's o.k.
We had lots of fun
I rode with Papa for awhile
I went on Papa's Run"
"I rode with Papa for so long
Mommy, I held tight
I knew when it was time to go
We saw the man in white"
"I gave Papa a great big hug
He gave a big one too.
Grandma, just before we left
I gave him one for you"
"The man in white brought me home
Then, he went away
Grandma, I am really glad
You taught me how to pray"
"Our daughter called when they got home,
Told her, I'd be fine.
I was just leaving to visit you,
Had something on my mind."
"So, this is why I need to talk,
When all is said and done.
I'll pray tonight, for the man in white,
To go on Papa's Run.
