Rose and the Man in Black

Her friends had warned, "He's not Mr. Right
He'll take what he wants, then ride out of sight"
She knew they meant well, with a smile headed back
But there was something about the Man in Black

At the pub he stared into his brew
Advice and opinions on just what to do
"She's lookin' for a briefcase, tie and suit
Not saddlebags, leathers, beard and scoot"

"Don't forget her kids
The 'ol bartender warns
Man that's one Rose
Complete with thorns"

With that he stood and with a grin
Realized he couldn't win
All backed off, expecting a fight
But the Man in Black rode into the night

She felt the need for a glass of wine
Words of friends, still haunting her mind
Of how her ex had turned his back
What to do about the Man in Black

The wind felt good, helped clear his mind
Was glad to leave the crowd behind
Swore he'd never do it again
Knew his heart was too far in

Laughed as he thought about her boys
Of thumb wars, wrestling, playing with toys
How with washing his bike, a ride they could earn
'Til, "step aside boys, it's momma's turn"

"Who am I kidding?, I've got to be mad
Thinkin' I could be somebody's dad
"Better pack my shit, get out of town
Be nothing but heartbreak, by hangin' around"

She checked her boys, all tucked in bed
"Forget your heart, think with your head
I'll tell him it's over, I'll tell him it's through
That'd be the smart thing to do"

He opened his saddlebag, came face to face
With a certain someone's Teddy Bear, strategically placed
Her youngest knew, he'd bring it back
'Cause he was, "Little Bro," to the Man in Black

Want or need, lust or love
May be none, or all of the above
Just as her heart yearned for more
There came an all too familiar roar

He walked up her steps
She met him halfway
"Rose, there's somethin'
I've got to say"

"Til that day I first met you
It was cool to be alone
But I have found within your heart
A love I've never known"

"A million reasons, why 'this' could never be
But one and only one, is what will set me free
You know where I'm at, you know how I feel
It's up to you now to close the deal"

"My boys and I have come a long way
So listen carefully to what I say"
He thought, "this is it, I know I'm through"
Was ready to hear, "nice knowin' you"

"The freedom you love, the call of the road
You're ridin' into one hell of a load
You're a man of your word, with a heart that's true
That'd be enough for just me and you"

An eternal pause, a look at his face
She needed the pieces to fit into place
It wasn't until she looked in his hand
What she needed to know, to understand.

"Do I let you in, or say good-bye?
Cut you loose, or give you a try?
Seein' you brought his Teddy Bear back
Welcome home Man in Black"
